Term 1, 2023 Weeks 3-4
Principal's Message
Parent information evenings
Week 5, Wednesday 1st March Sacred Heart will be hosting a Parent Information evening for K-6. This is an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and receive information about the year. In 2022 we were unable to have this evening due to COVID restrictions.
There will be a BBQ available from 6-7.15, with the Loreto Students helping out.
Information and times will be placed on the Compass portal and Newsletter.
Yesterday we celebrate Ash Wednesday.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday 22 February and concludes Thursday 16th April, 2023. Pope Francis has called for everyone to remember that Lent symbolises a time of new beginnings that summons us, and enables us, to come back to the Lord wholeheartedly, in every aspect of our life.
God Bless

Ash Wednesday
Today we celebrated Ash Wednesday with a lovely Mass prepared by Years 3/4. Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. Father Pius administered the ashes during Mass. These ashes are a visible symbol of penance and are made from blessed palm branches, taken from the previous year's palm Sunday Mass.

Shrove Tuesday

Why do they eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?
Shrove Tuesday marks the last day before Lent, traditionally a period of abstinence. This is associated with clearing your cupboards of goods such as sugar, fats, and eggs. Pancakes were traditionally eaten on this day to use up such foods before the 40-day fasting season of Lent began

Year 1 and 2
Year 1 and 2 have had a wonderful start to the year. They have been very busy with lots of hands on maths, writing, reading, learning about how to grow plants in science and much much more.

Sacred Heart Swimming Carnival
The 10th of February marked the Sacred Heart Swimming Carnival for 2023. Unfortunately due to illness, the number of students competing was at an all time low. Nevertheless, the students were out in full force, swimming in numerous events and cheering constantly for their sporting house.
The day kicked off with the across the pool events. Some swam with no assistance, others took a trusty noodle with them. The Year 5/6s were in the water to be there for them if the need arose, yet thankfully they were only needed as a support crew. Their presence reinforced to the across the pool entrants they were safe.
The little pool events saw teamwork at its best. The children trudged through the water whilst balancing cups of water, jumping through hoops and tagging their peers. Those who were not in many big pool events were treated to further activities in the little pool with Mrs Hallett and Mrs Gilder throughout the day.
The spirit of sportsmanship was well and truly present throughout the day. Regardless of whether a student was in the Emu, or the Kangaroos sporting house, the students were constantly cheering for each other and encouraging each other to finish. The cheering that went on during the teacher/staff, parent and student relay, probably could have been heard down the street. This final event for the day resulted in the parent team - comprised of Fiona, Lisa, Anna and Jace, winning by over a body length. There was not much in it between the parent and teacher/staff throughout the majority of the race, but with Jace swimming the final lap for the parent team, the teacher/staff team was left behind.
All students, whether a place getter or not, should be very proud of their conduct at the pool. The Junior Boy Champion went to Rex Thomas. The Junior Girl Champion went to Isabella Dunlop. A friendly battle between our 11yr old girls, resulted in a tie between Libby Morse and Bridget Hallett. The Senior Girl champion was deservingly won by Annabelle Bradley.
The winning house was the Emus, yet the Kangaroos point score was not far behind.
Some of our primary students have qualified for the Northern Region. The Northern Region Swimming carnival will be held at Mudgee on the 24th February, followed by Dio on 8th March Dubbo, and Polding the 30th March.
